Rethinking the Public Transportation Experience

We are designing a public transit experience that is more pleasant, enjoyable, and productive.

Admitting expertise with logistics but not with the “experience” of actual trips, the Boston area’s public transit agency (MBTA) came to us and asked how we might design public transit experiences that are more pleasant, enjoyable, and productive. We began by rethinking the experience as being about mobility, first and foremost, an then explored how to use new media technologies to connect passengers to the MBTA stations. The MBTA is not only a transit system but acts as a residential and commercial entry point to and facilitator of the area’s neighborhoods. Its services add value to a rider’s journey and foster socio-economic engagement.
